Uganda Society of Architects and Green Building Council Uganda Sign MoU to Advance Sustainable Building Practices

The Uganda Society of Architects (USA) and the Green Building Council Uganda (GBCUG) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration in advancing sustainable design and construction practices across the country.

The signing ceremony took place on Friday, November 7, 2025, at the USA offices in Kampala. The Uganda Society of Architects was represented by its President, Arch. Jacqueline Namayanja; Executive Secretary, Rebecca Birunji; and Chairman of the Board of Practice, Arch. Patrick Komaketch. The Green Building Council Uganda delegation included Co-founder and Director, Adv. Trudy Muwanga; Director, Moses Lutalo; and Director, Arch. Christine Muwanga.

The MoU aims to accelerate Uganda’s transition toward a low-carbon and environmentally responsible built environment. It focuses on advocacy, capacity building, and research initiatives designed to integrate sustainability principles into architectural education, professional practice, and the broader construction industry.

This collaboration supports Uganda’s national development goals under the Fourth National Development Plan (NDP IV) and aligns with international frameworks such as the Paris Agreement and Uganda’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

Speaking at the event, Adv. Trudy Muwanga, Executive Director and Co-founder of GBCUG, hailed the partnership as a pivotal move toward a shared vision of a greener and more resilient Uganda.

“By partnering with the Uganda Society of Architects, we can enhance professional capacity, drive innovation, and ensure sustainability remains at the heart of Uganda’s development,” she said.

Arch. Jacqueline Namayanja, President of the Uganda Society of Architects, highlighted the critical role of collaboration in fostering sustainable urban growth.

“Architects are key players in shaping the sustainability of our communities. This partnership underscores our commitment to responsible design and professional unity in building a greener future,” she remarked.
